Grace Happenings | October 11, 2023

Pastor’s Pen

Life is often a series of challenging and trying times.  Either you are in that kind of time now, you are just coming out of one, or you are headed for another one.  Jesus told us life would be like that.  He cautioned us when He said, I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world, (John 16:33).  Because life is so like that, we need to learn how to handle these kinds of times in the strength of the Lord, as opposed to being befuddled and sometimes bitter.

In the face of the ups and downs of life, I am encouraged by the words from I Peter 5:6-7. So, humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time He will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.

Trying times remind us that we are not in charge.   As much we like to take charge, we are really not in charge in the big scheme of things.  Life is fragile and is always more than we can handle on our own, so humbling ourselves under His mighty hand is a good place to start.  Which is so much better than freaking out and going, “Oh my!  What am I going to do?” Worry is one of the ways we try to maintain control.  Mark Twain said,” I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”  So instead of panic and worry, simply realize that nothing catches God by surprise and He can handle this time of my life.

These challenging times remind us how much God cares about us.  As long as we are fighting the battle in our own strength, we will never understand God’s care. Peter goes on to add that He will restore, support, and strengthen you, and He will place you on a firm foundation, (I Peter 5:10).  Understand that God is a gentleman, and He will not force His help on us, but as we humble ourselves and allow Him to work in our lives, we will begin to understand His love and care for us as He promises to support, strengthen, and give us a firm footing on our journey.

I’m excited to see you this weekend.

Our last Find Your People will be October 16.

We would love to see you there.
