Grace Happenings | July 20, 2022

Pastors Pen

Paul gives us a hard word in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  It would not be a difficult word had he not included the words in all circumstances. Certainly, it is easier to rejoice, pray and have thanksgiving when things are going as we wish. Rejoicing, praying continually, and being thankful in all circumstances becomes the hallmark of the believer and what sets believers apart from everyone else.

There are certain lessons we will never learn and spiritual growth we will never know apart from rejoicing in loss, praying through darkness, and giving thanks no matter the circumstances. It is in these moments that we find what we truly believe. True faith is seen not when everything is coming up roses, true faith is found in the surrender that no matter what the circumstances, God has got this, so I can rejoice, pray and be thankful. It is in this that we become more and more like Jesus.

2 Corinthians 2:14-15 (NKJV) says, Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. Surrendering all to Jesus and rejoicing, praying without ceasing, and giving thanks in all circumstances releases the aroma of the presence of Jesus to all of those around.

A great example of this is the woman who broke the alabaster container and anointed Jesus with the valuable perfumed oil contained within (see Mark 14). In full surrender, she gave of herself and this precious perfume. What was cool, she surrendered it all to Jesus and when she came out of the room she smelled the same as Jesus.

Praying that God will give each of us strength to rejoice, pray, and give thanks no matter the circumstances….and as a result, a beautiful aroma will be released in our lives.
