Pastor’s Pen

On the weekend we talked about the kindness of Father God. I think one of the most important thoughts on the teaching was: Whatever the Father is to Jesus, He is to us. The Father has put us into Christ so that He can enjoy the same relationship with us that He has with Jesus.

I am still soaking in this thought (I am challenged by the message too). This morning I have been asking what defined Jesus’ relationship with the Father that I (you) can step into also. Some of us have an ill-at-ease relationship with father figures, especially God the Father. What we have had modeled from our earthly fathers and what we have been taught about God the Father has often distorted what the relationship with Abba Father can be.

Jesus loved to be in His presence and knew how to immediately come into His evident presence. Jesus longed to step away from busyness and the expectations people had on Him to spend time with Abba. Luke 4:42 says, At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for Him and when they came to where He was, they tried to keep Him from leaving them. There will always be something or someone that tries to keep you from spending time with Abba Father. The more time spent in His presence the less awkward intimate time with the Father will feel and the more time spent the better you will know His heart.

The other thing about Jesus’ relationship with the Father that I want is His sense of instant obedience. Jesus knew Abba’s heart and voice so well that He instantly did whatever the Father called Him to do. John 5:19 speaks of this instant obedience, Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. I still overthink what God is asking me to do. What is there to think about if Abba, Who has my best interest at heart, is asking me to do something? I want to be quick to say, “Not my will, but Yours be done!”

There are no doubt many more ways we can discover how we too can step into the same relationship with the Father that Jesus had. We can start by knowing Jesus was sent not only so you could have a relationship with Him, but so that He could have a relationship with us.

I’ll see you this week and we will work on Part 3 of Who Do You Say That I AM?
